Eikholt Conference 2024, on person-centred rehabilitation

The Eikholt conference is held in August each year and aims to disseminate relevant expertise related to visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness. This year, the conference was held on 21-22 August as a physical conference with the theme "See and hear me - about person-centred rehabilitation".
The aim was to reach out to everyone who works with and is interested in rehabilitation, and who meets people with impaired vision and hearing. The conference was attended by occupational therapists, vision therapists, audio therapists, audiographers, opticians, environmental therapists, psychologists, counsellors and others. The experience and feedback was that meeting physically is important and desirable also in the future.

See and hear me - about facilitating development and rehabilitation
Person-centred rehabilitation is a process that relies on partnership and dialogue between users and professionals to
create insight and mastery ( Eikholt-rapport-nr-01_20-Eikholtmodellen.pdf).
For many Eikholt users, having a combined visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness is perceived as having an invisible disability that their surroundings do not understand or take into account. Others experience being invisibilised and disregarded. The experience is one of not being seen and heard for who they are, because their surroundings are unsure how to deal with a person with a combined visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness.
In a rehabilitation process, it is particularly important that people with visual and hearing impairments/deafblindness feel seen and heard by their helpers, carers and professionals. This happens through good human encounters where safe relationships and trust are created.
This conference aimed to provide a refresher on how you can facilitate and use yourself to support another person's development and rehabilitation.
This year's conference was recognised with continuing education credits by Norwegian Association of Opticians (11 NOFEP points) and Norsk Physiotherapy Association (11 hours)
