Vision and hearing assessment and customisation of assistive technology

Eikholt is a resource and competence centre that offers courses for people with combined visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness and their carers.

Do your hearing aids have light signals that you can't see? Do your hearing aids muffle the sound of the white cane against the ground and make it difficult to orientate yourself? Is the temple so thick that your hearing aid doesn't fit behind your ear? Do you need filter glasses to avoid being blinded by the light when finding your way around?

In order for you to have the best possible conditions for an everyday life where you can participate in activities, communicate, orientate yourself and find your way around, it is important to consider both vision and hearing at the same time when mapping and adapting assistive technology. We have knowledge and experience of this at Eikholt.

Sight and hearing affect each other

Sight and hearing affect each other. When we talk to each other, the brain uses both vision and hearing to understand what is being said. People with hearing loss use their vision to hear what is being said. People with impaired vision need to hear what is being said more clearly because they cannot see the person speaking. Vision and hearing courses are therefore useful even if you are blind or deaf.

What is a vision and hearing course?

A vision and hearing course usually lasts three days, and we plan the content of the course together with you. You are welcome to bring your close contacts.

Some of the things we do on the course:

  • Assessing vision and hearing. This is done in Eikholt's AudioVisual clinic, which is often referred to as The AV clinic.
  • Try out assistive technology
  • Adjusts and customises assistive technology for the best possible vision and hearing
  • Try out the changes in different situations and activities
  • Spend plenty of time providing information and answering questions so that you and your loved ones have a good understanding of your vision and hearing loss and what it means in everyday life
  • Involvement of a local counsellor and other agencies as you wish

You cannot get assistive technology from Eikholt. We collaborate with audiologists, opticians and assistive technology centres so that you can get hearing aids and assistive technology that you have tested with us.
