Orientation and mobility when both vision and hearing are impaired

Eikholtis a resource and competence centre that offers courses for people with combined visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness and their carers.
What is orientation and mobility?
Orientation is about knowing where you are in relation to your surroundings. Mobility means movement. When orientating and moving from one place to another, there are three questions you need to consider:
- Where am I?
- Where am I going?
- How do I get there?
What can Eikholt offer you in orientation and mobility?
We offer orientation and mobility training for people with combined visual and hearing impairments. You will gain knowledge of techniques and be trained in useful tools so that you can strengthen your orientation and mobility skills. The training will promote independence in everyday life.
Our individual courses are based on your conditions and needs, and the content is drawn up together with you and, if applicable, your carers. If you wish, we can also involve local counsellors or other agencies.
The course can be held at Eikholt, your workplace, at school or at your home. The duration is 2-4 days, but the course can also be organised as individual days spread over time.
Examples of course content:
- Use of vision and hearing in orientation and mobility
- Use of mobility stick, GPS, mobile phone and apps, filter glasses and binoculars
- Echolocalisation
- Companion techniques
- Guide dog and haptic signals to support orientation and mobility
