Self-preparedness - what is it and what should I do?

This week is emergency preparedness week. This means that all households in Norway will receive a brochure in their mailbox with information about self-preparedness. This is information that comes from Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Preparedness (DBS). In addition to the brochure, a video with speech, text and Norwegian sign language has been produced, and the Norwegian Association of the Blind has distributed the brochure to its members.
What is self-preparedness?
Preparedness is about being prepared for unforeseen events such as natural disasters, accidents or other crises. It involves having a plan and the necessary resources available to handle situations effectively and safely.
Norwegian authorities recommend that as many people as possible are prepared to fend for themselves for a week. This is called self-preparedness. This is because municipalities and emergency services must prioritise those who cannot manage without help in a crisis.
What should you do?
I the checklist that DSB has created for your self-preparedness you'll find examples of things that are good to have at home. You should review your needs and consider what solutions are possible where you live. Remember that family, friends and neighbours can work together on self-preparedness.Check your stock at regular intervals.
