Eikholt 40 years

Bricklayer Olaf Frøiland was the one who, in a meeting with deafblind Halvdan Larsen, had the vision of building a national centre for the deafblind at Konnerud in Drammen. Thanks to a national effort under the auspices of Lions in Norway and contributions from a number of organisations and teams from north to south, the money for the construction of Eikholt was raised.

When the centre opened in 1980, housing was an important part of Eikholt. Today, the residential service has almost been discontinued. Eikholt has undergone fantastic development and is now a unique centre with user services for assessing and optimising vision and hearing, training and adapting technical aids and a meeting place for users from all over the country.

Eikholt contributes significantly to research, innovation and dissemination nationally and internationally. New knowledge and expertise are developed on the basis of the significant clinical activities carried out. The path from research to the application of new knowledge in user services is short.

Plans were in place to celebrate the 40th anniversary this August with guests from home and abroad. Due to the corona pandemic, the anniversary celebrations have been postponed until August 2021. We hope that the conditions will then be right for a large-scale celebration!

Happy birthday!
