The family course "Life with Usher" - so good to be able to learn from each other

The aim of the course was to give young and old alike an arena in which to forge new friendships, meet others in the same situation and gain professional refreshment. There was a programme in 4-5 different groups at any given time, with subjects, games and fun.

The young people got to play at the racing centre, climbing centre and boat trip in between their academic programme.

The little ones bathed, painted, felted mats and learnt about eyes and ears.

The adults heard ophthalmologist Josephine Prener Holtan present the latest news from research. Torun Vatne talked about being a sibling to a child with a disability, and Rolf Mjønes, Audiographer at Eikholt, gave an insight into how sight and hearing work together to provide speech understanding, Geir Aker reminded us of the power of clear communication in the family, and Erling Fidjestøl had good conversations with the young people. Plenty of time was also set aside to share experiences in the parents' group; what is it like to be a mum and dad to a child with Usher.

We are particularly pleased with the contribution of Elisabeth and Eirik Stangeland, who gave parents and young people hope for the future by sharing their experiences of life with Usher.

We would like to say a big thank you to all the families who shared their experiences and lives, and to all the speakers who contributed to this course.
