Eikholt has two national missions:

1.NAV customisation course

Eikholt has been assigned national responsibility for NAV adaptation courses for people with combined visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness. This is a right under the National Insurance Act. The right to adaptation courses also applies to close relatives.

Eikholt offers:
- Combined vision and hearing assessment / optimisation of vision and hearing function
- rehabilitation and habilitation
- training in different forms of communication
- testing and training in ICT

  • testing and training in mobility and orientation
  • training also includes programmes for families and networks

2.Dissemination of information and expertise

Eikholt is also part of the Norwegian National Advisory Unit on Deafblindness, a specialist health service coordinated by the Northern Norway Regional Health Authority.

We focus on disseminating information and expertise at both individual and system level in various parts of the service organisation. In consultation with the service recipient, the needs of the individual case are clarified. This may include counselling, guidance, courses, professional days and training for kindergartens and schools, workplaces, the primary health service, other parts of the specialist health service, NAV, etc.

Eikholt spreads knowledge about deafblindness through webinars and conferences, and many of our counsellors teach at universities and university colleges, in hospitals and in the health service in general. Eikholt is a member of various professional networks and co-operates with relevant professional environments in Norway and several other countries.

It is crucial that professionals who meet people with a hearing or vision problem are aware of the possibility that there may be a dual sensory loss that should be followed up.

Eikholt as a national "Meeting Place"

We place great emphasis on creating a vibrant arena for everyone who visits Eikholt. Many users and carers express that they benefit greatly from meeting others in similar situations.

Exchanging experiences and socialising with others with user experience or experience as a caregiver is a value in itself. We recognise that users at different stages of life and with different experiences of sensory loss benefit and enjoy meeting each other.

A Eikholt programme provides opportunities for meaning, community, development and improved quality of life.
